Massive flooding in Thailand has severely affected production of hard disk drives, a primary component used in computer storage.
Nearly a third of the world’s hard disk drives are made in Thailand and with major fabrication plants currently submerged under several feet of floodwater, major HDD manufacturers are being forced to cut supply and raise prices on hard drives across the board.
As inventories shrink and producers struggle to keep up, hard disk drive prices will remain high and availability will drop significantly. This is already starting to occur as drive purchasing is limited to one per order and multiple drives are only shipping in new server purchases.
What does this mean for you?
1) PCG recommends purchasing additional drives while still available. These drives should be held as alternative backup drives in the event of drive failure.
ALL NEW DRIVE ORDERS COULD TAKE UP TO 3 MONTHS TO FILL.
2) All FILE SERVERS should have at least one SPARE DRIVE available during this outage. Server related storage purchases should be placed IMMEDIATELY. Our manufacturing partners say things will get worse before they get better.
